The Sacre Cœur in Montmartre is the second most visited monument in France. Every year, more than ten million travelers and visitors admire the panoramic view from the summit of the butte where the grand basilica sits proudly. Built in the Romano-Byzantine style of architecture, the Basilique du Sacre Cœur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) is in the form of a Greek cross. The ceiling of the apse (semi-dome vault over the alter) is decorated with the largest mosaic in France. The central dome of the church reaches a height of 83 meters and stands majestically over the Montmartre quarter.
The construction of the Basilique du Sacre Cœur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) started in 1875 following the defeat of the French people during the Franco-Prussian War. It was thought that this defeat was a sign from God, hence the reason for the construction of such an significant monument. Although it was an important building for the Christian community in Paris, the dedication (consecration) of the Eglise du Sacre Cœur (Sacred Heart Church) did not take place until 1919.
